West Scarborough Rail Trail - 50 Years in the Waiting
Misha Perozak, Sam Wong, Monica Gutierrez
All residents of Toronto are invited to join the Scarborough Junction Community’s Jane’s Walk on the proposed West Scarborough Rail Trail. The trail follows a Hydro corridor and abandoned rail lines connecting to the Meadoway in the north and the Don Valley Trail in the south. The West Scarborough Rail Trail is the missing link on a trail system that will connect Lake Ontario to Rouge National Park.
First proposed more than 50 years ago by University of Toronto students, the West Scarborough Rail Trail has garnered renewed interest from Scarborough Junction Community members due to an increase in planned and proposed development in the area. The community will see an influx of more than 50,000 new residents in the next few years and they will need a place to recreate, relax and connect in natural surroundings.
The future of the trail is at risk from City Transportation and special interest objections. Walk this trail with us and help support its creation.
The Scarborough Junction Community’s vision for the trail includes a multi-use pedestrian and cycling trail featuring native plants and trees that connects surrounding neighbourhoods to new and existing parks, playgrounds, pollinator gardens, public transit, commercial destinations, the Meadoway, and more. Come and explore this raw and little known trail and see parts of Scarborough from a perspective very few has seen. The walk will include a stop at a Pioneer Cemetery and pass by the GECO World War 2 Bomb Girl’s factory lands.
